A FAMILY run electrical testing company which was started in a back bedroom over 20 years ago is continuing to expand after seeing turnover reach almost £4.5m.
Hawkesworth Appliance Testing is the country’s leading independent PAT testing company, started by Paul and Jane Hawkesworth in 1993, and now has a portfolio of thousands of clients across the UK.
Today the company employs over 30 people at its head office at Thirsk Industrial Estate and a further 85 engineers up and down the country and expects turnover to exceed £4.7m in 2015.
Hawkesworth Managing Director Tim Crowley said: “The business has grown massively over the last few years. Our portfolio is extensive with clients as diverse as the Environment Agency and RedBull F1 Racing to Serco and Travis Perkins and last year our engineers carried out over 11 million tests for more than 22,000 customers.
“The challenge for us now is to continue to grow and in 2015 we expect turnover to exceed an all time high of £4.7m and we are confident that we’ll bring more personnel in, directly and with the number of engineers we have contracted nationally.”
PAT testing, or portable appliance testing, is the name of a process by which electrical appliances are routinely checked for safety. It is the responsibility of the employer to make sure all electrical appliances are safe to use, and records kept, to prove systematic and regular inspections have taken place.
Tim added: “We’ve come such a long way since the business was started by Paul and Jane in 1993. What we’ve not been afraid to do is to change things when we’ve needed to, to push ourselves and adapt our business model to reflect the current climate. And I believe our flexibility, as well as the level of service we provide to our clients, is why Hawkesworth is going from strength to strength.”
