Come and celebrate our fantastic North East marine wildlife and explore the diversity of our seas and coasts; find out more about local sealife and have a whale of a time at our free workshops and family fun events.

Whale Workshop
During museum opening hours

Walk amongst ocean giants in a unique display of inflatable, life-size and life-like marine mammals, sharks and reptiles – including a 15 metre long Sperm Whale

Saturday 20 – Friday 26 July
The Learning Pod
Every hour 11am – 3pm daily, 1.30pm – 3.30pm Sunday  

Free hands-on workshops where you can meet marine experts and find out more about sharks, whales and dolphins. Places are limited, allocated on a first come first served basis

Fishy Fun
11am -3pm

Help us to create a wonderful watery world by creating your own sea creature and adding it to our undersea wall

Fishy Face painting
11am – 3pm daily, Sunday 1.30pm – 4.30pm

Take the plunge and get your face painted as your favourite marine creature

Whale Rescue
During museum opening hours

Ever given first aid to a two-tonne whale? Join the British Divers Marine Life Rescue and take part in a rescue with their life-size ‘stranded’ Pilot Whale

Commotion in the Ocean

Down at the bottom of the deep blue sea, find fishy fun for you and me! Meet the Great North Mouse for a storytelling session for young children and their families

Kittiwake Walk 

Meet at the entrance to the Baltic Art Gallery for this short walk around the quayside.  Watch the Kittiwakes and learn about their fascinating life story.  Free – booking is essential.

Tuesday 23 July • 7pm – 8pm
The Big North East Whale Watch Guide

Take a virtual tour of the best whale and dolphin watching sites in the North East with ORCA and gain top tips on what to look for, when to watch and how to recognise common marine mammal species. Free, booking essential.

Wednesday 24 July • 7pm – 9pm
Kittiwakes on the Tyne

An evening of talks and discussion about these fascinating seabirds. Find out about the life of a Kittiwake and the latest research.  Free, booking essential.

Thursday 25 July • 7pm – 8pm
Rescue Round Up!

A look at some unusual whale, dolphin and seal rescues from around the UK.  From mass strandings of Pilot whales in Scotland, Sperm and Sei whales in the North East and a seal trapped in a nuclear power station.  Free, booking essential.

Friday 26 July • 10am – 1pm
Seashore Explore

Delve into the rockpools of St Mary’s Island to discover a variety of seashore creatures.  Transport will be provided from the museum.  Free, booking is essential.
