A FREE WHEELED SPORTS EVENT is being staged at the Washington Wheeled Sports Park on Friday 30 August from 12noon to 3pm.

Organised by Sunderland City Council to celebrate the reopening of the wheeled sports park and to promote the facilities the event features:

  • An exhibition of stunts and tricks from professional Trials and BMX display team 3Sixty.
  • The exhibition will be followed by coaching and advice for the young people on how to learn and develop the skills they have just enjoyed watching.

Mayor of the City of Sunderland Councillor Bob Heron said: ” It is a real pleasure to re-open the park here at Washington. We hope that this event will encourage even more young people to come along and see what’s available, give it a try and maybe get involved themselves in the future.”

Sunderland City Council’s Portfolio Holder for City Services, Councillor James Blackburn added: “Washington Wheeled Sports Park along with others in Silksworth, Fulwell, Herrington Country Park and Houghton provides facilities across the city, where young people can take part in ‘urban sports’ and develop their skills and have fun.

“Riders of bikes, skateboards and scooters need somewhere like this to practice along with their friends and fellow enthusiasts. The Wheeled Sports parks we provide are proving to be popular community attractions enjoyed by thousands of young people every year.

Bikes and safety gear will also be available at the event so everyone has the chance to have a go. There will prizes supplied by local business ‘The BMX Box’ for young riders taking part in competitions and events throughout the day.

During the programme of fun and activities, there will also be reminders of the importance of wearing safety gear and helmets to reduce the risk of accident or injury when using the wheeled sports parks.
