International Women’s Day is coming to Newcastle when flagship enterprise centre ‘The Beacon’ hosts a day of events, 8th March.

Women can find out about support organisations to help them in their personal and professional lives as part of the worldwide empowerment campaign on Saturday 8th March.

The five-hour showcase at the Westgate Road centre – from 11am to 4pm – coincides with thousands of other events around the world and will highlight support available to women from charities and other organisations in the North East.

It will also feature a range of the best small businesses being run by women across the region, with women’s groups and charities also promoted.

Small businesses will sell locally made goods from stalls, free canapés will be supplied by Beacon-based catering company Seasons Plenty, and chefs from the business hub’s popular Bistro will supply picnic-style food.

Treatments for women by women, which require a small donation, will be available in the professionally-equipped salon, and there will be the opportunity to access holistic treatments. Emily Adam-Supremily Jewellery, Edita Vasiljeviene-Natural cosmetics and Naseem-Organic honey are amongst those participating.

There will be:

  • Free Canapés
  • A range of small business run by women
  • Treatment sessions (in salon)
  • Womens Groups and Charities
  • A Yoga session at 11am
  • A Qi Gong taster session between 2pm and 3pm (Qi Gong is the practice of aligning movement, breath, and awareness for exercise, healing, and meditation).

Andrew Watts, Executive Director of leading environmental charity Groundwork South Tyneside and Newcastle, which operates and part funded The Beacon alongside charity Centre West, said: “This event very much supports and highlights International Women’s Day.

“It is incredibly important that the role of women in society is every bit as equal as that of men, and by supporting women locally we are helping add to the worldwide momentum that this initiative is gathering.

“Many types of business operate from The Beacon, and we are also used by a diverse range of community groups. It is quite right that it is accessible for positive events such as this.”

International Women’s Day, whose theme this year is ‘inspiring change’, celebrates the social, political and economic achievements of women while focusing world attention on areas requiring further action.
