Sunderland’s Christmas programme will launch with the flick of a switch on Thursday 13 November as a very special guest helps to switch on the city’s Christmas lights. 90s pop star Faye Tozer, from the hugely popular award-winning group Steps, will join The Right Worshipful, The Mayor of Sunderland, Cllr Stuart Porthouse and a star from the Empire Theatre’s Christmas pantomime in pressing that all important button.
Since settling in the North East with her Sunderland born husband, Faye has developed a real love for the region and is looking forward to playing such an important part in Sunderland’s festive programme. Faye said: “’I am delighted to be a part of this year’s Christmas Light switch on to celebrate the city’s improvements and bring the season in with a sparkle’
The Right Worshipful, The Mayor of Sunderland, Cllr Stuart Porthouse said “Our annual light switch-on has long been recognised as a spectacular, bright and colourful event that begins our countdown to Christmas. Lights at Christmas always help remind us of how welcoming the festive season is and our switch-on is a fantastic family and community occasion for everyone to enjoy”
The event which will be held at the Crowtree site, will see the switch on itself being preceded by a full stage programme. Beginning at 6pm, the evening’s entertainment will feature this year’s City Sings winners, East Herrington Primary School Choir and Eclipse, Southmoor Secondary School Choir as well as the rhythm and blues tones of The Revolutionaires. The event will culminate in a breathtaking firework display as the night sky explodes in a burst of colour and sparkle.
Chris Alexander, Chief Operating Officer at Sunderland Live said “The Christmas Lights Switch On is a special event in Sunderland’s calendar as it marks the beginning of our full Christmas programme which will run right up until 6 January”
