Why you should study in the North East England

The North East is a great place to live and study, offering many benefits for our region’s booming student population. Here are just a few:
Top universities
Unlike some other regions, the North East is spoilt for choice when it comes to universities. In fact, our unis are ranked amongst some of the best in the UK, according to the University League Table 2017.
Of our region, Durham University is ranked 5th in the UK, with Newcastle University following in 25th spot. Northumbria University ranks a respectable 59th, while Sunderland University and Teesside University chart at 103 and 107 respectively. It’s great to see that all of our establishments have received high student satisfaction scores too.
Our universities also have access to leading facilities. Whether it’s Northumbria University’s Business School, which was awarded Business School of the Year at the Times Higher Education Awards 2015, or Newcastle University’s award-winning research facilities, the region is home to everything you need to support your studies.
Business opportunities
If you aspire to set up your own business, you’ll find a wealth of opportunities here in the North East. We’re already home to some of the UK’s most successful corporations, including Nissan, Greggs, Sage and Vertu Motors.
Last year, according to statistics from Start-Up Tracker, there were 1,931 new business start-ups in Newcastle alone and, as analysis by Nixon Williams shows, the North East is a great place to set up a tech business. Behind London, the North East witnessed the second largest growth in new tech businesses, increasing 9.2% in 2015. This jump is largely attributed to the outstanding talent pool in the region, as a result of our leading universities.
Affordable
With tuition fees, housing and equipment costs to cover, the North East is a great choice for those looking for low living costs. For example, in Durham, you can expect to pay an average of £82 rent each week. This is considerably less than living in Oxford and Cambridge, where the weekly rent is £111 and £115 respectively.
You can also enjoy a night out for next to nothing in the region, while transport is similarly affordable — Stagecoach offers a termly student bus pass for as little as £107, for example.
