A former run down bed and breakfast property located on the seafront at Roker has been sensitively converted into a nine apartment housing scheme for people with a care and /or support need.

Local private investors Jon and Benice Slater have refurbished Anchor Lodge on Roker Terrace to provide beautiful, yet practical fully furnished self-contained studio apartments to enable people with a support need to live at home independently for longer.

Communal facilities within the scheme include lounge and dining area with fantastic views across the Roker seafront; activity room; quiet lounge; laundry; landscaped gardens and social areas. All studios have excellent views, many with timeless sea and coastal views.

Jon and Benice own Slayco a local construction and maintenance company who have undertaken all of the refurbishment work within this accommodation. Jon said “all of our workforce live in Sunderland and it is great for us to invest in our own City in terms of employment provision; apprenticeships and provision of fantastic housing options”.

Benice Slater said “Jon and I both wanted to deliver high quality accommodation for people in a fantastic location and you can’t get much better than this. We saw Anchor Lodge and we knew straight away that the location and the accommodation it could offer would be perfect, particularly for people with Alzheimer’s or a dementia diagnosis.  We are so proud with the end result and know that Anchor Lodge can make a significant difference to people’s lives, including those with a caring role. We know there are people living in the City who need good quality accommodation but don’t know where to go and how to access it, Anchor Lodge is just the start and we want to raise awareness of our housing provision and make it accessible to those who need it”.

Hayley Quinn from Merit Care said “Anchor Lodge is a perfect property and location to support people with independent living; reablement and re skilling. Merit Care is so excited to work in partnership with Benice and Jon to deliver excellent accommodation and care services to people who really deserve positive outcomes in their lives.  This is a ground breaking scheme in terms of the accommodation and the way in which care services can be delivered in a more flexible and person centred way.  For Merit Care Anchor Lodge gives us a base in Sunderland to enable us to deliver care services to people at home in the Roker, Seaburn, Fulwell areas and link those people into our services at Anchor Lodge to increase wellbeing and social opportunities”.

Anchor Lodge provides fully furnished studio apartments with en suite facilities for rent and also on short term lets for respite care.

Work has already commenced on a further property within the same location for the same purpose.

Apartments will be let primarily to people with dementia, but applications will also be considered from people with a learning disability, Down’s and Korsakoff’s.
