In September 2011 Three adventurous Royal Navy Air Traffic Control Officers sat down to talk about ways of raising money for charity, possessing a mutual enthusiasm for all things adventure, outdoors and motoring there was little doubt the outcome was going to be more than a little interesting . Together they are known as “Team Mongkes Fist” and they are embarking on a 10,000 mile journey to the other side the world in a tiny, wholly unsuitable car to raise money for charity.
Starting in July 2013 at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose in Cornwalland finishing at Ulan Baator the capital city of Mongolia, this daunting task will be carried out unassisted using only a 1.0 litre Nissan Micra and the determination of the team members themselves. Crossing rivers, ravines, mountain ranges, deserts and no less than seventeen national borders, the journey will undoubtedly be unforgiving, dangerous and unpredictable.
The team is hoping that fundraising efforts will equate to “a £ per mile”, resulting in over £10,000 being raised for charity. Our charities are The Heel and Toe Children’s Charity based in Durham, The Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) and Operation Smile UK.
“All three of these charities are extremely worthy causes, we encourage people to have a look at them and see the amazing work they do.”
“Benfield Motor Group have been kind enough to donate a Nissan Micra to us, for approximately four weeks we’ll be living out of this tiny car designed with a trip to the supermarket in mind. Three six footers and all our kit in a Micra will certainly prove snug. Thankfully we’re all good friends!”
The route has been planned with real adventure in mind, passing through the Pyrenees, Alps and the Transfagarasan highway, taking in Chernobyl and the Mongolian Steppe it’s going to prove a real test of character. You will be able to follow the journey from start to finish via the team’s website, social media pages and their interactive blog and map. The whole adventure will also be documented on film.
“There is no backup. It is us, the car and what we have in the boot and roofrack. Any adversity we encounter will have to be dealt with by us. We’re looking forward to it immensely, the way we see
it, the more trouble we find ourselves in, the more money we can raise for good causes. We’re looking forward to sharing every moment of this adventure.”
Born in Carlisle originally but now living in Gateshead, team member Adam Marshall is keen to establish regional partnerships and sponsors for the expedition:
“We are raising money for Heel and Toe, a local charity and have support from regional companies like Connexions Group and Benfield Motor Group. We are continuously looking to establish more partnerships so would love to hear from other regional businesses if they’d like to help.”
