A Royal Visit from the Queen
HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN TO BEGIN NORTH EAST VISIT IN SUNDERLAND
SUNDERLAND will be the first port of call when Her Majesty The Queen begins her Diamond Jubilee tour of the North East on July 18.
The Queen, accompanied by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, will begin a two day tour of the region with a visit to the Port of Sunderland.
There, Her Majesty and His Royal Highness will be invited to take a trip down memory lane when they become the first visitors to a four day Diamond Jubilee exhibition celebrating The Queen’sher 60 year reign.
The Sunderland Diamond Jubilee Exhibition has been arranged by Sunderland City Council to give residents the chance to step back in time and find out more about each of the seven decades of The Queen’s reign.
Held at the Port of Sunderland, the exhibition will include displays made up from a collection of memorabilia donated by members of the public in and around the city.
The event will showcase some of the milestone moments that have taken place during The Queen’s 60 year reign, giving an insight into the past of the city and the UK.
Councillor Paul Watson, Chairman of the Port of Sunderland, said: “We’re delighted that Her Majesty The Queen has chosen to begin her Diamond Jubilee tour of the North East in Sunderland.
The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh last visited Sunderland in 2009 when they opened the new eco-friendly Washington Secondary School.
The North East England visit (July 18th-19th) will include Sunderland, South Tyneside, North Tyneside, Gateshead, Durham City , Stockton-on- Tees and Leeds.

Jubilee exhibition, Sunderland
A hotline has been launched for members of the public to apply for tickets for the Sunderland Diamond Jubilee Exhibition, organised by Sunderland City Council. Tickets are free but limited to only 6,500 for the four day event, which runs between Thursday, July 19 and Sunday, July 22. A maximum of four tickets can be ordered by each caller.
The exhibition will be held at the Port of Sunderland and will include displays made up from a collection of memorabilia donated by members of the public in and around Sunderland. The event will showcase some of the milestone moments throughout Queen Elizabeth’s 60 year reign, giving an insight into the past of the city and the UK.
Councillor Paul Watson, leader of Sunderland City Council, said: “Sunderland has developed into a very successful city during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and an exhibition of this kind will capture this and give people the opportunity to see Sunderland’s transition for themselves.
“We hope that by gathering items that belong to people from the city and surrounding communities, we will be able to capture the essence of each of the six decades of the Queen’s reign, and bring a real personal and authentic touch to the exhibition. It really is an event that is not to be missed and we are sure it will prove really popular with people from the city.”
Tickets can be booked from today, and members of the public are able to secure their space on to one of a number of time slots – with tours starting every 10 minutes and lasting for around 70 minutes. Visitors will be transported to the Port of Sunderland by bus from a city centre pick up point, and will have the chance to view the exhibition in small groups of around 30.
When ordering tickets, members of the public will be given a unique reference number, which they will need to quote on the day. Free car parking will be available for ticket holders at the civic centre and visitors will need to arrive 15 minutes before their allocated slot in order to board transport provided to the Port of Sunderland.
