Sunderland’s Christmas Lights Switch On 17th November

This year Sunderland’s Christmas programme will be launched by Andrea Faustini, the X Factor favourite with a passion for pugs.

The loveable Italian star who launched his debut album Kelly this summer, will join The Right Worshipful, The Mayor of Sunderland, Cllr Barry Curran and special guests in pressing that all important button at the Christmas Lights Switch On event on 17 November (rescheduled from 12 November).

The 2014 reality show finalist who brought the judging panel to tears with his moving performances, will take to the stage to serenade the crowds as part of the evening’s musical line up.

Councillor Curran said: “Our annual Christmas switch-on is a great way to begin the countdown to Christmas and to show what our city has to offer.

“The festive celebrations are a fantastic family occasion and I’d like to extend a warm welcome to everyone. There is so much to see, do and enjoy again this Christmas in our city I hope as many people as possible come along to join in the fun.”

The event which will be held at the New Keel Square will be hosted by MCs Simon Grundy and Danni from the Sun FM breakfast show and will see the switch on being preceded by a full stage programme. Beginning at 6.30pm, the evening’s entertainment will feature this year’s City Sings winners, St Anthony’s Secondary School Choir before Andrea takes to the stage to entertain visitors. The event will culminate in a breathtaking firework display as the night sky explodes in a burst of colour and sparkle.

A range of tempting treats will be available to satisfy hungry tums as the former Crowtree site plays hosts to a range of delicious street food from 5.30pm. Access to Keel Square will be from High Street West, St Mary’s Way and the former Crowtree site.
