Exhibition: ‘Past In-sight’. History Of Visually Impaired, Aug – Dec

Gateshead and South Tyneside Sight Service, the leading local provider of services for visually impaired people are bringing a special exhibition to the north-east. First exhibition is Wednesday 28^th August and run until Sunday 1^st September and second 14^th September – 14^th December.

Around 50 volunteers have been involved in the project, which has included archive research, oral history interviews and organising display material for the final exhibitions.

One of their key aims is to raise awareness and increase inclusion for visually impaired people in the wider community. As part of this aim they received funding from the heritage lottery to host two exhibitions on visually impaired people’s experiences of employment from 1900 to the present day.

Their services give skills, confidence and support to enable people with sight loss to live independently and integrate into society.

Exhibitions

• The exhibitions are free of charge
• The first will be held at St Mary’s Heritage Centre, Gateshead. It will open on Wednesday 28^th August and run until Sunday 1^st September between the times 10am-4pm.
• The second exhibition will run from 14^th September – 14^th December at South Shields Museum and Art Gallery and will be open Mon-Sat throughout.
• The Past In-Sight exhibitions examine changing attitudes and opportunities for visually impaired people in employment and in the wider world and include audio, visual and interactive displays. The exhibitions are suitable for sighted and visually impaired visitors and for people of all ages.
