Gateshead and South Tyneside Sight Service, the leading local provider of services for visually impaired people are bringing a special exhibition to the north-east. First exhibition is Wednesday 28th August and run until Sunday 1st September and second 14th September – 14th December.

Around 50 volunteers have been involved in the project, which has included archive research, oral history interviews and organising display material for the final exhibitions.

One of their key aims is to raise awareness and increase inclusion for visually impaired people in the wider community. As part of this aim they received funding from the heritage lottery to host two exhibitions on visually impaired people’s experiences of employment from 1900 to the present day.

Their services give skills, confidence and support to enable people with sight loss to live independently and integrate into society.
