Rep RED - Introducing: Artistic Company 'Sunderland REP'

Sunderland REP is a young and vibrant artistic company, producing theatre, film, radio and other events, in the city of Sunderland and beyond.

It was formed, by me (Paul Dunn), after a successful collaboration last summer produced the promenade production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Barnes Park. You can read the Sunderland Echo article reporting on the event here.

Since then the Rep has produced a number of radio dramas, broadcast on Spark FM, and last month we began a series of Rehearsed Reading Nights, where new and up-and-coming writers can have their work performed by our company of professional actors, and then receive feedback and constructive criticism from an invited audience of peers and experts, as well as members of the public.

Last month’s event proved very successful; Anna Ambelez, reviewing for Remotegoat, said, “The packed room had standing room only … A company definitely worth looking out for!” So, keen to capitalise on the success of that, we are hosting our second night this month.

When: Wednesday 27 February.

Where: The Stumble Inn (used to be the Royalty pub) Chester Road, Sunderland.

Time: 7pm.

Cost: £3 on the door.

Naturally, we’d love to see as many people there as possible, so if you’re free and you’re looking for something different to do in Sunderland, why not come along? It’s a relaxed evening, with the bar open throughout, and a live musician providing entertainment between the readings. You can find out more at our website.

The idea behind Sunderland REP is to produce new and exciting artistic work, using local talent, and we’re always keen to get involved in collaborations with other companies and professionals within the region. There’s plenty of info on our website, as well as a contacts page; we’d love to hear from anyone who wants to get involved with us or has an idea they’d like to pitch to us.

For example, if sketch comedy is your thing, then you’ll be pleased to know that at the end of March we’ll be putting on a show – in aid of Comic Relief – which will feature classic sketches by the likes of Python, Fry & Laurie, French & Saunders, The Two Ronnies, and many more, and we’re very happy to be collaborating with The Pier Pavillion in South Shields (home of the Westovians) on this. The show will take place there on 28th March, and we’d love to see you there!

Sunderland celebrates its 21st birthday as a city this year, and there will be plenty of events planned throughout the year to celebrate this. Sunderland REP is looking forward to playing a big part in that – keep your eyes on our website and facebook page for more details as they emerge!
