TEESSIDE’S very own giant Meccano-like structure, the landmark Tees Transporter Bridge, plays host to a North East Meccano Society (NEMS) Exhibition this Saturday and Sunday (July 20 and 21) in the Transporter Bridge Visitor Centre.
The Exhibition will include a 6ft working model of the Transporter Bridge and another of the now demolished Runcorn-Widnes Transporter Bridge, while there will also be an opportunity to speak with Meccano enthusiasts and experts.
It is the first exhibition the North East Meccano Society has held at the landmark structure since the organisation was established in 1975, and will also include Meccano models of engines, transportation and even a music box.
There will also be an opportunity for visitors to purchase small model making kits from exhibitors and Transporter Bridge merchandise from the Visitor Centre Shop. Visitors can also take a trip over the River Tees on the famous bridge (Saturday only 9.30am – 3.15pm at 15 minute intervals, normal crossing rates apply).
NEMS Chairman John Herdman said: “We host a number of exhibitions throughout the region each year and we are delighted the Tees Transporter Bridge is hosting an exhibition of members’ models for the first time.
“It is a fantastic opportunity to promote Meccano to people young and old.”
The free two-day event – from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday – is part of the wider £2.6m Heritage Lottery Fund award supported activities at the Bridge, which will include the introduction of lift access to the 160ft high upper walkway, refurbishment of the gondola and the already installed Winding House Viewing Area.

“The exhibition is a must-see for anyone with an interest in Meccano, model making, bridges and transportation and provides a fantastic opportunity to meet and chat with some of the leading model makers in our region.
“The Society’s events are very popular and we hope that this year’s event will be the first of many annual NEMS exhibitions at the Transporter Bridge.”
