‘A parmo’

STOCKTON’S ever popular World Parmo Competition returns to the Borough this month and lovers of the local delicacy are now invited to nominate their favourite takeaway or restaurant.

Stockton Council is hosting the famous competition as part of its annual Summer Show which takes place at Preston Park Museum and Grounds on Sunday 25 and Monday 26 August.

This year the competition will be broken down into two categories – best takeaway and best restaurant. The two most popular nominees from each category will go forward to the finals and will battle it out in a cook-off on Sunday 25 August from 1.30pm.

The winners of the cook-off will scoop the coveted trophies and be titled World Parmo Champions 2013.

Members of the public with a fondness for the chicken and cheese dish can nominate their favourite takeaway or restaurant by completing a voting slip available from participating restaurants. Voting can also be done via email. Send details (your name, phone number and address) and name of nominated restaurant/takeaway) to the events team at Stockton Council – events@stockton.gov.uk

Voting will be open until 19 August. All nominations received will be entered into a prize draw with the winners treated to a parmo meal for two.

Councillor Ken Dixon, Stockton Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, said: “In previous years the World Parmo Competition has attracted hundreds of votes from across the globe – as far as Japan. This dish is clearly still very popular across Stockton and the wider Tees Valley so I’d encourage anyone with a favourite takeaway or restaurant to make sure they vote to see the best parmo chefs battle it out on the day.”

A parmo traditionally involves either a chicken or pork fillet which is tenderised, cooked in breadcrumbs and topped with a cheese sauce.

Any eateries which has not received an information pack and is interested in entering the competition should email events@stockton.gov.uk or telephone (01642) 526733.
