A STRING of ‘Big’ events has been lined up by Sunderland City Council for spring and summer this year.
Last year the ‘Sunderland in 2012’ programme provided residents of all ages and abilities the opportunity to take part in some form of sport, physical activity or leisure pursuit.
The ‘Big Events 2013’ programme aims to make things even bigger and better with adventure, running, walking, swimming and cycling to choose from..
Cllr John Kelly, Portfolio Holder for Public Health, Wellness and Culture said
“Sunderland in 2012 was a marvellous year for sport and physical activity in Sunderland. Thousands of residents took part in one or more events throughout the year and the feedback received has been brilliant.
“We are delighted to be able to continue some of these events in 2013 and provide residents of all ages with the opportunity to become more active and take part in a big city event.
Starting with Sunderland Adventure Week Monday 25 – Sunday 31 March, the Big Events in 2013 programme also includes:
- Sunderland Big Mini Fun Run, Saturday 27 April
- Sunderland Big Bike Ride, Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 June
- Swimathon Friday 5 July
- Sunderland Big Walk. Sunday 8 Septembe
The Active Sunderland Adventure Week includes a raft of free or discounted adventurous sports such as open water swimming, blind football, climbing, skiing and snowboarding.
As well as all of this there will be a BMX Festival event taking place at Silksworth Skate Park and a ‘Rave Night’ at the Raich Carter Centre involving fluorescent football, table tennis and street dance.
