Sunderland’s 21st Young Achievers’ Awards will be officially launched today Wednesday (23 October) by Metro Radio’s breakfast show duo Steve and Karen.

The annual awards which began in 1992, recognise and celebrate the achievements of young people from across Sunderland. Each year hundreds of young people are nominated and following a robust judging process, those shortlisted are invited to a prestigious award ceremony at the Stadium of Light.

The award scheme is for individuals and groups of young people aged 11 to 20 years and nominations are now being sought in the following categories:-

  •         Music and performing arts
  •         Personal achievement
  •         Service to the community
  •         Academic achievement
  •         Sport
  •         Young carer
  •         Volunteer

Steve Furnell from Metro Radio’s ‘Steve and Karen Breakfast Show’ said: “Awards like these make you stop and realise that there are so many positive, highly motivated young people across our great region.

“For Karen and myself to play our part in recognising these outstanding individuals is an absolute honour.”

Sunderland City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services, Councillor Pat Smith added: “The Young Achievers’ Awards is a fantastic scheme and although Sunderland City Council is the driving force behind it, it wouldn’t be possible without the support of our sponsors.

” Even in these times of austerity, it is so important that we continue to recognise and reward the achievements of our young people – every young person nominated is remarkable in their own way and I am often humbled by their talents and achievements through adversity.”
