SEASIDE fun and free activities for all the family are being held at Seaburn beach next Thursday (6 August).
They are all part of the Active Sunderland programme of events and activities for 2015 that includes a series of area-based community sports festivals.
Each one of Sunderland’s five areas – North, West, East, Coalfield and Washington – are hosting their own Area Active Sunderland Community Sports Festival.
The North festival is from 12noon to 4pm on Thursday 6 August on the seafront at Seaburn (More dates and detail of seaside activities are also attached).
Sunderland City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Public Health, Wellness and Culture, Councillor John Kelly said: “It is well recognised that being active can lead to great improvements in people’s physical and mental wellbeing. With programmes such as Active Sunderland we are working towards creating a city where everyone is as active as they can be.
“At the heart of this approach is the creation and delivery of as many opportunities as possible for residents to take part in healthy activities and pastimes.
“Working with partners and sports clubs, the aim is to increase the number of people being active across the city. At the Festival everyone is encouraged to take part, free of charge, in a sport or activity they might not usually have chosen and also to find out more about the wider Active Sunderland programme including the very popular BIG Events series.”
All of the activities are free and everyone, of all ages and abilities, is encouraged to come along and have a go. Activities on the day include:
• Beach football
• Beach rugby
• Beach volleyball
• Mini golf
• Nordic walks
• Led runs
• Family games and challenges
• Cycle rides and cycle challenges
• Trampolining
Earlier in July more than a dozen city centre locations, including Keel Square, hosted a series of fun acticities for all (see picture attachment).
The final area festival of the summer is on Thursday 27 August at Hetton Lyons Country Park in Hetton. It will also feature many free activities for all the family.
Details on the Hetton event are being released soon. Please check the Active Sunderland Facebook page to keep up to date with the activity programme or go to www.activesunderland.org.uk for Active Sunderland news and events.
