A group of Tyneside teachers are getting ready to roll their trousers up for charity, and walk over hot coals.
Twelve brave members of staff and one ex parent from Preston Grange Primary School have signed up for the Maggie’s Fire Walk Challenge to raise money for people affected by cancer.
The ‘Torch the Teachers’ team will take part in the event on Wednesday November 12 at David Lloyd Leisure Club.
Each participant has to take part in a training session before the event, and then walk across a length of burning embers or coals, which could reach temperatures of 1200 °F.
Head Teacher Tracey Taylor, who is leading her team in the challenge said: “As a staff we are taking on the challenge of fire walking in support of two of our valued members of staff who are currently fighting cancer. We are passionate about fundraising for Maggie’s at Freeman Hospital, as the Centre has provided exceptional comfort and support to both members of our staff.
“Our school community has given their wholehearted support in our fundraising for Maggie’s, and we are enthusiastic about our fire walking challenge, in the hope that it will raise further funds for this special charity.”

The Maggie’s Cancer Centre is based in the grounds of the Freeman Hospital and offers practical, emotional and social support to anyone affected by cancer.
Since opening its doors in May 2013, more than 25,000 people affected by cancer have visited the centre.
Centre Fundraising Manager Kelly Knighting-Wykes said: “We are really excited about our Fire Walk Event and very grateful to the staff at Preston Grange for signing up. We hope to have more than 50 people from across the region take part to help us raise as much money as possible for people affected by cancer and their families.”
