Train operator First TransPennine Express has announced a number of exciting improvements to its network, including a £60m investment in a fleet of brand new high performance trains.
Due to come into service at the end of 2013, these fully-equipped electric trains will increase capacity by as much as 80% on some routes and also slash journey times – great news whether you’re a regular commuter or just a weekend awayer!
The train operator – which offers services to and from North East towns Newcastle, Durham, Darlington, Middlesbrough, Thornaby and Yarm – will, of course, continue to run many of its current trains too, but has promised to strengthen its entire network, ensuring shorter journey times and at least 30% more capacity on every last service.
This means even more people can now travel across the north of England and into Scotland with First TransPennine Express – and that they’ll arrive at their destination much quicker, too!
Train-goers who often travel between the North East and North West will be especially pleased to hear that the company will be operating a new express service between Liverpool and Newcastle which will reduce journey time by an impressive 43 minutes.

As you’ll see, the new electric trains will offer:
- 210 seats across four carriages
- 25% more luggage capacity
- A top speed of 100mph.
- They’re also more environmentally friendly, resulting in a 35% reduction in CO2 emissions.
First TransPennine Express has also revealed plans for new depots in Liverpool and Preston, and predicts that these positive changes to its network will create around 200 new jobs.
