Sunderland is getting active with the help of this year’s Active Sunderland Participation events starting soon across the city.
The Active Sunderland BIG Mini Fun Run will be the first event of the series taking place on Saturday 2 May in Mowbray Park. This event is one of many fantastic running opportunities for people of all ages and abilities happening in Sunderland across a weekend which also includes the Sunderland Half Marathon and 10K.
Neil Revely, Executive Director for People Services for Sunderland City Council said: “This year’s Active Sunderland Events programme will once again give everyone in the city, whatever their age or ability, the opportunity to get involved in an active and fun event.
“Our first event, The Big Mini Fun Run is a great way for young children and their parents to join in and have some good healthy fun. The event, in our award-winning Mowbray Park, has proved especially popular with family groups and it is always great to see so many people taking part. The run has a fantastic friendly atmosphere and I encourage as many people as possible to come along and join in.”
The run takes place from 1.30pm and is open to children aged 3 – 7 if they are accompanied by an adult, and children aged 8 – 10 who can run it by themselves. There is a choice a one mile or, new for this year, a two-mile circuit of the park. Everyone will receive an Active Sunderland medal when they finish. The BIG Mini Fun Run costs just £3 per person.
The next Active Sunderland Event in the calendar hugely popular Sunderland BIG Bike Ride which takes place on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 June. The 5 mile family bike ride takes place in Herrington Country Park on the Saturday. On the Sunday starting from the University Campus, St. Peter’s Riverside, riders can take in some of the best scenery Sunderland has to offer with a choice of three different routes covering distances of 14, 20 and 35 miles.
