Stockton Borough Council is ‘getting physical’ in a bid to support Mental Health Awareness Week which takes place between Monday 13 and Sunday 19 May 2013.

The Council has a variety of events, including guided walks, cycle rides, sporting classes and gym sessions, which aim to get people active – a proven way of helping mental health by improving mood, increasing levels of relaxation and generally making people feel happier.

Cllr Jim Beall, Cabinet Member for Cabinet Member for Adult Services and Health, said: “Looking after your mental health is as important as taking care of yourself physically. By becoming more active, you not only get the physical benefits of exercise but you’re likely to feel better in yourself too.

“As well as Mental Health Week, events take place throughout the year to help introduce you to different activities. You’ll find all the events are welcoming, great fun, run by experienced leaders and open to absolute beginners – not only will they improve your mood and fitness but you’re likely to make new friends too. We hope to see you soon.”
