A MULTI AWARD-winning Newcastle bar has created a menu to suit every dietary requirement for NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week (16 – 22 January 2017).

City Tavern at Northumberland Road, Newcastle has expanded its food offering to create a menu of starters, mains and desserts to cater for all guests, including those with special dietary requirements.

The menu, which includes dishes suitable for those with dairy, gluten and wheat allergies, as well as vegetarian and vegan options, is offering two courses for £10, or three for £15, during the food-filled week.

Among the vegetarian and vegan dishes featured on the specially-crafted menu are spinach salad with feta – which can be changed for vegan feta – walnut, pomegranate and balsamic dressing and a sweet potato and black bean burger served in vegan buns with winter spices and avocado salsa.

The state-of-the-art bar, widely recognised for its Tudor style façade, is also serving up a range of meat and fish dishes which are also dairy, gluten and wheat free, including starters of mackerel, spiced rhubarb and watercress and locally sourced ham and homemade pease pudding.

The mains include roast salmon and celeriac mash with spinach and wholegrain mustard pouring sauce and Jamaican goat curry with coconut rice and ‘Jamaican peas’ served in a scotch bonnet, lime and ginger cooking liquor.

Those with a sweet tooth can opt for a dessert, which include pears poached in spiced red wine served with vanilla ice cream, winter berry cheesecake served with pouring cream or vanilla ice cream and black forest gâteau served with pouring cream and a shot of kirsch.

City Tavern owner, David King hopes the upcoming Restaurant Week will be even more successful than the summer event, which saw hundreds of visitors come through the tavern’s doors.

“After the success of our previous restaurant week menu, we wanted to ensure that we crafted a menu that includes a great variety of dishes that are suitable to all of our diners – including vegans, vegetarians, and those with gluten, wheat and dairy allergies,” he said.

 “We’re looking forward to welcoming both new and regular customers to City Tavern this January and what better way to bring in the new year than with some top cuisine – with no turkey in sight.”

City Tavern was taken over by Mr King early in 2014 and then enjoyed a £450k refurbishment to create a state-of-the-art bar while still retaining the venue’s historic features.
