WYNYARD PLANETARIUM FOR STARGAZING EVENTS

WYNYARD Planetarium is taking part in the national BBC Stargazing LIVE event in January allowing people of all ages to learn all about the night sky.

The annual series of programmes will be broadcast on the BBC between 8 and 10 January 2013 and Wynyard Planetarium will host a series of events throughout January to complement the BBC coverage.

Throughout the month, the Planetarium is holding star shows and public observing. On January 4 you can head along for the ‘What’s Up?’ show and find out all about what stars and planets are in the sky for the coming months. The show starts at 7.30pm and is suitable for children aged six years and above.

On 4, 11 and 18 January there will be Stargazing LIVE Night Sky Observing sessions starting from 9pm if the skies are clear.

On 18 January the Planetarium will host the show ‘The Life Story of Stars’ which will help explain the mystery surrounding stars. From birth to death and where they live, stars are fundamental to our existence. Find out how they shine, where they’re born, in which constellation you can find the true monsters and where to locate those that have exploded, in the past and some that may in the future, becoming Supernovae. The show starts at 7.30pm.

Public shows cost £5 per adult, £3 per child or concession and £13 per family (two adults and two children). To book call the Planetarium on (01740) 630544. Observing takes place at the Planetarium and Observatory on the first and third Friday of each month from 9 – 10.30pm. Head along to see the wonders of the universe through telescopes. Public observing sessions are free but only take place if the sky is clear of cloud.

Councillor Ken Dixon, Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, said: “The BBC Stargazing LIVE event has proved hugely popular over the past few years and it is great to have the Planetarium here in Stockton where people of all ages can find out all about the wonders of the night sky.

“The public shows offer people of all ages the perfect opportunity to learn about the universe.”
