The Big Bang North East returns to Newcastle University on 3rd July!
This year there will be more projects, workshops and activities! Around 1200 young people are set to be involved and celebrate the best of science, technology, engineering and maths. Many sponsorship opportunities are available for local businesses and organisations.
What happened at the Big Bang North East 2012?
- On July 4th hundreds of pupils from schools across the North East flocked to Newcastle University to enjoy a STEM extravaganza.
- There were 57 projects on display including some amazingly innovative ideas like an ultrasonic blind spot detection system and a solar–powered water purifier. The judges were awed and humbled as ever and had some very difficult decisions to make. Seventeen regional prizes were awarded and eleven projects were nominated to represent North East England at the Big Bang national fair in 2013.
- Visiting schools and competitors enjoyed a wide range of activities, shows and workshops. Punk Science were a big hit with their zany science show whilst Science Junkies picked up on the Olympic vibe with a sports-science themed presentation. Motivating young people to pursue their passions is a key aim of the event and our speakers, engineer and TV star Yewande Akinola and previous Big Bang national winners Deepesh Patel and Aseem Mishra, proved to be inspirational role models.
- Students were able to get hands-on in the two activity zones and the workshop sessions. Popular drop-in stands included the IoP science buskers (particularly the straw harmonicas), VEX robotics, Welding with Chocolate and the NorthumbriaUniversity materials science stand. Workshops sessions ranged from sports science from SunderlandUniversity and animal care with the Blue Cross to communication technology (NARC) and Northern Architecture’s model making session.

- At least 1200 young people (already full)

Why is this important?
- It provides a purpose and a direction for school science and technology, making them real and concrete experiences
- It embraces ALL students of ALL abilities and celebrates their work
- The UK needs more scientists and engineers, and needs them to be entrepreneurial, vigorous economic contributors
- The North East needs a flourishing scientific and engineering future to trump its amazing scientific and engineering history – the young people of today will be crucial to that future

1. Zones
This year we’re organising the projects and drop-in activities in two zones, one of projects and one of drop-in activities. If you‘re particularly keen to engage large numbers and have high visibility then this could be the opportunity for you. Your organisation will be named and have logos on all branded materials in that zone, alongside the national and lead sponsors where appropriate.

2. Prizes
Prizes are the celebration of students’ achievements. They really do achieve amazing things, so please help us celebrate them. For each prize class you sponsor, we ask for a contribution of £500, of which more than half is paid to the winners and runners-up. Can’t find one you’d like? No problem! Ask us and we’ll create one to get your message across.

3. Signage
Your name and logo will be on all locally generated whole-event signage outside the two zones, alongside national and lead sponsors – this has to be a great way to get noticed (£2000)
4. Programme
Your name, logo and full-page article in the programme, named as programme sponsor – when teachers, students and others read our programme, get your name near the front, and get your message across and taken home with them (£750)
5. Shows
Whether it’s Punk Science or our Engineering Show, you’ll have a captive audience for your brand in our shows (£2000 for each show)
Travel to The Big Bang UK Young Scientists’ and Engineers’ Fair
It costs money to get a team to the National Fair and for them to stay there for three days. Help give winning students from our region the trip of a lifetime, and associate your organisation with their achievements. (£500 per team)
Travel to The Big Bang North East
Can you help schools get here? It’s difficult for schools if they’re a long distance away, and this is an ideal way to support a school or several schools in your local area. (£200 per school)
Lunch for judges and activity providers
This is a great opportunity to get noticed by our business and academic supporters. If they’re your target audience, this is the opportunity for you! (£1500)
Enterprise Competition
We are running a competition to find the project with the best business brains behind it. If this is something you’d like to be associated with, we want to hear from you. We need sponsorship for this and judges. We’ve already got teams queuing up! (£2000)
